Analysis on the Phytochemical and Antibacterial Activity of Thalassia hemprichii

Abstract
This study investigated the phytochemical composition and antibacterial activity of extracts from the sea grass Thalassia hemprichii. Samples were collected, dried, and extracted using methanol and ethanol. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins in both extracts. Antibacterial activity was assessed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes using both disc and well diffusion methods at various extract concentrations (2-5 mg/ml). Neither the methanolic nor ethanolic extracts exhibited any antibacterial activity against the tested bacterial strains. Thalassia hemprichii extract shows maximum zone of inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Thalassia hemprichii can be used as medicines because it contains secondary metabolities compounds which have the potential to be an antimicrobial that fights against agents of pathogenic diseases on human. The organisms namely Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pyogenes shows no activity. The absence of inhibition due to factors such as bacterial resistance mechanism, insufficient extracts concentration or the absence of active antimicrobial compounds in the extract.
