Abstract
The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)–CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) system is a bacterial defence mechanism system against phage infection and plasmid transfer in nature. This mechanism has been repurposed as a powerful RNA-guided exogeneous DNA targeting platform for genome editing, transcriptional perturbation, epigenetic modulation, and genome imaging. Over the subsequent years, it has received extensive attention owing to its easy manipulation, high efficiency, and wide application in gene editing and Transcriptional regulation in plants. In this chapter an attempt has been made to understand the mechanism of this revolutionized phenomena and how this technology changed the genetic variation landscape of gene editing in plant science.
