Abstract
Face recognition has emerged as one of the most prominent and widely deployed biometric technologies in contemporary society. Its applications span diverse domains, including security and surveillance systems, mobile device authentication, attendance monitoring, access control, and smart city infrastructures. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning techniques has significantly enhanced the performance and reliability of face recognition systems. However, recognizing faces in unconstrained real-world environments remains a challenging task, particularly when facial features are partially obscured by occlusions such as face masks, sunglasses, scarves, helmets, hair, hands, or other external objects. These occlusions conceal critical facial attributes, thereby reducing the availability of discriminative information required for accurate identification and verification. Consequently, the presence of occlusions can substantially degrade recognition performance and system robustness. This chapter provides a comprehensive review of intelligent face recognition under real-world occlusion conditions. It examines the challenges associated with occluded facial imagery, discusses both traditional and deep learning-based recognition approaches, explores recent developments in occlusion-aware face recognition techniques, and outlines emerging research trends and future directions in this evolving field.
