Abstract
This book chapter provides a comprehensive analysis of India’s economic evolution and structural transformation from the pre-independence era through modern development, highlighting the pivotal role of infrastructure. Historically shaped by colonial exploitation and agrarian dominance, the post-independence Indian economy transitioned through centralized Five-Year Plans, the Green Revolution, and landmark industrial projects. The epochal 1991 Liberalisation, Privatisation, and Globalisation (LPG) reforms catalyzed market-driven growth, expanding foreign direct investment and foreign trade. Central to this economic acceleration has been the continuous modernization of physical, social, digital, institutional, and core infrastructure networks. Key strategic initiatives—including the National Infrastructure Pipeline (NIP), PM Gati Shakti, Bharatmala, Sagarmala, and Digital India—have significantly enhanced multimodal freight logistics, digital financial inclusion via UPI, and regional connectivity through schemes like UDAN. Furthermore, emerging paradigms such as Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), startup-led tech innovation, Artificial Intelligence adoption, and citizen-centric governance are driving systemic efficiency. Despite facing persistent structural constraints—such as high capital requirements, land acquisition disputes, regulatory bottlenecks, and logistics costs—India continues to leverage its demographic dividend and digital capabilities. Aligning rapid infrastructure development with environmental sustainability and net-zero targets lays a resilient foundation for India’s Vision 2047 economic roadmap.
